For each part, ISO 13849 outlines the requirements for it to achieve functional safety. EN ISO 13849-1 is the most important standard for regulating the basic principles and performance required of a safety control system for machines and devices. This standard was greatly revised in November 2006. This revision has caused major changes in the fundamentals of safety system design. ISO 13849 provides a sim­pli­fied approach to func­tion­al safety for machine build­ers.

This document was prepared to help explain NOTE 3 The requirements provided in this part of ISO 13849 for programmable electronic systems are compatible with the methodology for the design and development of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems for machinery given in IEC 62061. This part of ISO 13849 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the performance level required for carrying out safety functions. 3 Under EN ISO 13849-1, the consideration of safety starts with the risks associated with the machine, its function and its operation. Machine designers are obliged to eliminate risks before considering further measures to reduce or control risks (EN ISO 12100). Unlike IEC 61508, ISO 13849 is focused rather on channels than on complete safety related systems. However, safety related systems of categories B, 1 and 2 are neither redundant, nor do they have "channels", so for these systems, "channel" would just be synonymous for "system".
